Sport relief mile(s) - £750 barrier smashed = red Mohawk

Post by This Time Next Year »

In a moment of madness, partially inspired by the advert on tv, wherein a certain Mr Lineker claims to have 'been quite good at football once, I had a trial for Leicester you know...', I decided to sign up for the Sport Relief mile on March 21st, but it doesn't stop there, I signed up to do six of them, all in a row!

I'll be doing it in Southampton, so I won't be surprised if most of you aren't there to clap me on, but if you would like to sponsor me then you are certainly more than welcome, and can do so at the following link: http://www.mysportrelief.com/davidjohns

I've not done anything like this before, last summer I did a few runs of about 3.5 miles round the mean streets of Eastleigh, and that was a struggle, but that's the furthest I've done, so I am expecting this to be a real challenge for me. Certainly no walk in the park, so any sponsorship money will be well earned I can assure you, and I don't even need to say how good a cause sport relief (comic relief) is.

So, anything you can spare (even if it's only a £1) would be very much appreciated, and I've got two months to get some sort of fitness, off to the gym tomorrow then I think.

Thank you in advance :thumb

Re: Sport relief mile(s) - The stakes are upped

Post by This Time Next Year »

The stakes have now officially been raised, if donations top £1000 then I will do the run in a Southampton shirt. Not sure which will hurt more, the run or wearing the shirt. It sounds a lot to raise, but I think if everyone donates what they can, it just might be possible.

I'll be off to the gym tonight to start my training.

Thank you to those that have donated so far. :thumb

Good luck with it and I hope you managed to finish the course with or without the stripes..

Too much trouble to donate from here to be honest with you. I shall give a tenner to S4R in your name ok??

Does the donate online thing not work abroad? Rubbish! In that case I can't turn away ten pound for s4r can I? Thanks on their behalf.

Looks like I might be getting away with doing it without the stripes at the moment. But still plenty of time left to get those donations in.

I refuse to have a credit card, hence the comment. They have not exactly caught on here, it is PIN all the way. Plus any monies donated that way from here are not subject to the tax thingy.

I prefer to give an envelope to someone over there who can claim the tax thingy/whatsit.

I am going to choke here but I really do hope that you manage to wear the stripes. If you manage to hit the target and post a piccie of yourself wearing one of them shirts there will be an additional 50 quid donated in the name of This time Next year. Good Luck.

Ah ok, fair enough, and good donations that will no doubt be much appreciated.

:thumb :thumb

Thanks to the few of you that have donated so far, I have just broken the £100 mark so not a bad start but still a long way to go.

Played hockey today so no training this evening, but I managed two miles last night.

Oh, and yes pictures will be taken and posted, of course. Anyone know anyone I could borrow a stripey shirt from for the day? Size medium/large ideally.

You can always BUY a nice stripey shirt rather than borrow one , otherwise ask a Saints fan. :thumb

Hopefully the cup draw will spice up the stripey shirt incentive a little and raise a few more pennies.

Given that pay day is just around the corner / just been for most people, thought it would be an ideal time for an update. In the last week I have covered 10 miles, spread over 4 fairly equal sessions, my legs are aching and I'm bored of running already, but at least I've got some confidence I should be able to make it round the full 6 miles.

So far, I've raised £159 which is a good start, but still a very long way to go to get my £1000 target. As an inspiration, here is a list of stuff the money raised could be used to pay for, both at home and in Africa.
  • - Pay for a teacher to work with more than 70 street children in Bangladesh for one month.
    - Pay for mosquito nets to protect 12 mothers and their babies from contracting life-threatening malaria while they sleep in Uganda.
    - Pay for a young carer to meet with a specialist support worker who can help them cope with the difficulties they face.
    - Buy 20kg of seeds which a poor community in Kenya can use to grow their own food and crops.
    - Pay for a volunteer to visit an isolated older person in the UK so they feel less alone.
    - Feed a child in Kenya orphaned by AIDS for two days.
This list which I have compiled using the examples dotted around the sport relief website, demonstrates that even the smallest donation can make a huge difference to someone, £2 will buy a days food for a Kenyan orphan, £5 for a mosquito net... just imagine what my target of £1000 could get!

Once again big thanks to everyone that has donated so far :thumb
