To the London crowd - Mayoral elections

Post by HappyHour@TheBreweryOfLife »

Continuing on from the earlier thread about the mayoral referenda, I have to admit I am similarly flummoxed about who to vote for on Thursday.

A socialist ideologue, whose beliefs are slightly at odds with the city's ultra-capitalist economy, but who introduced the revolutionary C-Charge, greatly improved TfL before getting cocky, giving jobs/funding to his mates until he was (still quite recently) relieved of his duties
or
An Eton and Oxford educated posh boy who is backed by the City and the local media, and has an effective working relationship with Whitehall which, among other benefits, has a greater chance of securing more funding and powers for the city
or
A career public servant who is obsessed with claiming an excellent insight to the Met, although little else, but then nailed the debates Clegg-style.

My hopes for my new home are shared equally by all three which just doesn't help. And neither Boris nor Ken project anything close to my image of a major city leader (compare and contrast with Bloomberg). Paddick...well...

Siobhan Benita is quite cute....

So, if anyone else is giving a hoot, who are you voting for?

I think the situation shows what a stupid idea elected Moyors are. Elect a council who choose a Mayor, who should just be a figurehead without any executive powers.

Paddick? I thought he was awful in the debate that I watched. Kept mixing his words up.

A couple of minor gaffs but I think he still came out on top of the squabbling numpties to his right.

Bizarre how such a job, the chief executive of 8m people and a GNP of £350bn+, can't attract anyone better.

Nothing that stupid about having a leader who is elected by everyone instead of just his mates in the council chamber. As said before, this system has been shown to work in many places around the UK, most notably in London.

I don't agree with the Presidential system at the national level (where corrupt interest groups are more motivated to ensure the electorate is presented with their favoured candidates) but I believe this system is well-suited at the local level.

Chuck da bums out and elect the commie fellow traveling green party with a chance at getting elected. Always chuck da bums out. If they get settled/comfortable/ knowledgeable the corruption will increase.
Words ought to be a little wild, for they are the assault of thoughts on the unthinking.

Ah, sacre blue, Defender of Democracy! I can only assume that when Thatcher abolished the GLC (those pesky Londoners had to be punished for voting Labour) you were up in arms. Or are you in favour of vindictive attacks on local democracy?

Boris, anything else is wasted vote. Boris will win by about 8 points.

Ken is a joke.

Interesting though that, excuse the term, a dark horse has risen up the ranks, her odds have drastically come in lately

But its still Boris all the way
