car questions

Post by SuffolkPompeyMike »

I'm soon going to be looking for a small diesel car, pref between £1k to £1.5k in price. Not fussed by looks but needs to do 50mpg+, will be used mainly for 30 mile blasts on a roads. Can anyone with car knowledge suggest what i should go for? Also, from what year did power steering become common as the person that will be driving it would prefer to have it.

Cheers

Can't pretend to have that much expertise with cars but I used to have a hyundai getz crtd 1.5 diesel and it was fantastic. I'd suggest a look for a second hand one of those. Great engine - smooth acceleration, none of that lumpy performance some diesel cars give you - drove more like a petrol car.

Suzuki Swift, Skoda Fabia, Peugeot 206 or SEAT Ibiza. All generally reliable, and cheap to repair.

I have had very good experiences with several Ford D models.

Ha ha. I used to manage a vehicle fleet - we finished up with more than 30 Ford diesels, other makes were progressively eliminated.

My advice is get an old VW Golf/Polo that doesn't have a catalytic converter because you can then run it on veg oil for 80p/litre. It's worth paying a little extra for the car if you can make a massive saving on the fuel.

Personally I would avoid anything French. The best VAG cars without doubt are Skodas so ignore the name and the badge.

You sure it wasn't a fleet of 2CVs?

Great cars, the 2CV. Back in the 80's, having a 2CV was a great way of attracting hippy chicks.

Now, in 2012, I reckon the 2CV should make a comeback. Sponsored and built by the state and given out as punishment cars to drunk drivers, speeders and other micrococks convicted of driving offences. Instead of a driving ban, they should be made to rent and drive a state 2CV for a couple of years.

Engines good - other things could be better (particularly Renault).

I hired a Peugeot 5008 when we on the Cote d'Azur at Easter, which was a diesel. You wouldn't have known it was a diesel apart from the big sticker above the fuel cap. My only complaint was that I couldn't figure out how to to stream mp3s from my phone over the car stereo system via the Bluetooth link - I got the phone paired with the car no probs, but Hertz had seen fit to give me the manual from a different stereo system.

In terms of driveability, I'd have another one of them any day.
