Tosh. They exist by the grace of the people, we're permanently one referendum away from sacking them all.
Get rid of them and the country loses one of the biggest tourist attractions in the world. IIRC they used to be regarded as the fifth largest money making industry in the country.
It would cost the nation a fortune too - we earn approx. £160m per year in 'profit' off the back of their existence. I'd imagine they'd be entitled to go back on the deal with Parliament if removed from power.

If they got a security licence out if it then it's a good deal . They cost over 200 quid and courses are 150+ . And it's valid for 3 years So they can continue to use it for work .

Poor old D of E being taken into hospital and missing it all....

Let's be honest. He's not the first person to pretend to be ill to get out of a dull family occasion.

How would we cope aged 91 after a life of privilege and the best of everything money can buy? I guess we'll never know.
You really don't know what the square root of sixteen is... no-one does.

Yes, you're right, how can we possibly expect them to do anything in return for their benefits.

"they had to camp under London Bridge "

No they didn't. They were dropped off at 3am and started work at 5.30am. The coach driver shouldn't have thrown them off when he arrived too early...

"we were stranded on the side of the road for 20 minutes"

Oh, the humanity.

"they had to change into security gear in public"

More horror. If only they waited for the minibus to be unlocked....

"had no access to toilets for 24 hours"

Pish. Thousands of portaloos were situated along the pageant route plus I bet no-one was more than 100m from a pub, cafe or restaurant.

"Both stewards said they were originally told they would be paid. But when they got to the coach on Saturday night, they said, they were told that the work would be unpaid and that if they did not accept it they would not be considered for well-paid work at the Olympics."

If true, this is the only scandalous part of the story. If true.

If you want the state to create work and employ people then I'm happy to agree with you. You can't complain about the state being too large though. That's the trade off.

Its the not being paid for work that I'm not impressed by.

there was something sad and regressive about it imho. Proud that I can be proud of my homeland without looking like a 40 something year old **** with my facepainted waving a 99p shop flag.

After seeing some of that concert I think I would've preferred a bladder infection and a couple of nights in Hospital ( Its not as if hes going to be NHS ) than sit through that.

Grace Jones WTF !!!

That concert was highly entertaining for all the wrong reasons but loved the graphics on Buck House when Madness were doing Our House on the roof. And Tom Jones can still belt out a choon unlike Cliff, Elton and Macca who should retire from live performances and consider what plastic surgery to have next. Paul McCartney looks most peculiar - almost scary!
