They've wrecked it. Whether you like it or not, God Only Knows is a musical masterpiece. The scat section in the middle is the same chord sequence as the verses but raised a fourth, (E to A in the original), although it really doesn't sound like it. The chorus after that remains in that key, but in the turnaround it goes to the dominant 5th and uses that to return to the original key for the last verse and chorus. The result is a huge key change of a fifth, but you really don't notice it. It takes real musical genius to do this and real musical vandalism to leave it out of a cover, and that's exactly what the BBC did - they left out the last verse and the big key change.

Also, I've never been a big fan of these multi-star covers. Perfect Day, for example, was way better by Lou Reed on his own.
