The thing I could never understand (apart from this) was that the Taliban controlled much of the rural economy because they sold the heroin to whoever. Why didn`t we (and/or the Americans) give the "peasants" a higher price for the drugs and remove the Taliban funding at a stroke. I guess that is too simplistic!

Where's the opportunity to sell arms in that idea? The US economy depends on arms dealing, like the taliban relies on drug dealing.

I'm just guessing, but I bet the Northern Alliance warlords want control of the farms. And we've agreed to turn a blind eye for their allegiance.
