Amazing Grace
Perhaps the biggest asset that the US of A has ever had must surely be Obama - if the eulogy for the 7 black people who were tragically shot by that lunatic racist doesn't move you to tears, then nothing will. When I think of all the dingbats who have held the office of President - Reagan, Bush x 2, Johnson and various other nonentities, it becomes apparent just what a genius Obama has become in terms of the timing in his oratory and his connection with his people. And yet in America, he is reviled and pretty much every other part of the world, he is genuinely liked. Watch the clip on BBC News - Obama sings Amazing Grace, not pitch perfect but perhaps the best piece of theatre you'll ever see......

Re: Amazing Grace
LB Johnson was the most progressive president the USA ever had. His domestic achievements shouldn't be ignored.

Re: Amazing Grace
Brilliant presentation. Better timing and use of the long silence than even the great Nigel Havers.

Yes well, that why I talked about domestic policy. Vietnam is the stain on LBJ record.pompeygunner wrote:He was certainly progressive about Vietnam....LiT other account wrote:LB Johnson was the most progressive president the USA ever had. His domestic achievements shouldn't be ignored.

Re: Amazing Grace
LBJ was typical of many American Presidents and their ham fisted dabbling in the Far Easy - the capture of the Pueblo incident is a typical example and certainly provided an appalling blot on his Presidency. However, we're not here to talk about LBJ, but to laud (quite rightly) the skilled delivery of Obama's speech at such a poignant moment in American history. It was a masterpiece that compares more then favourably with great speeches of modern times - he's not only the incumbent President, he showed humanity and approachability and showed that the office of the most powerful man in the Western Hemisphere is also a real cool dude.......not a bad thing to have on your CV!LiT other account wrote:Yes well, that why I talked about domestic policy. Re: Amazing Grace
Agree about the forgiveness. There was a wonderful piece on Wimmin's Hour a few years ago where two mothers had both lost sons through a murder. The mother who had let go of her feelings of anger, bitterness and revenge (ie had forgiven the perpetrator) had gone on to have as reasonably happy a life as is possible in the circumstances. The other one, who hadn't, sank into a life of drink, drugs and ill-health. Bit simplistic, but that was the gist of it. It seems an impossible thing to do - to forgive such a deed but it doesn't forgive the crime - it just allows understanding and lets one move forward. God forbid I'm ever in that situation. The Cincinnati Kid wrote:I wouldn't say he was reviled Pomp.....he was elected twice you know.

Re: Amazing Grace
Clinton's domestic record was decent as well IIRC. Sadly the incident with the cigar in the Oval Orifice is the 1st thing most remember him for.
