The bl**dy thing is keeping local people off the roads and therefore away from my tearoom! And whilst I'm at it - any tips on how to run one and what to serve? Every other bugger on the planet seems to be an expert.

Sorry about the rant - this is the only place I can do it.

I can't help with tea, but I drink an awful lot of coffee and know the owners of a couple of excellent local places that serve coffee, tea, cake (and lunch / dinner in one).

Anyway, the Drury Lane tea and coffee company make amazing blends. If you want to mix the coffee up a bit, they're the best guys. If you want the same blend all the time, try Monmouth - it's lovely.

Hope it goes well. I work in West Sussex, will pop in if I'm ever passing :)

I'm fairly certain this site, based in good ol' Pompey, will help on the tea front. http://allabouttea.co.uk/

A proper pot of loose leaf tea is what's required. That and home made scones; an expert like me can spot a mass produced shop bought scone a mile off! Oh and a decent selection of gluten free cakes / scones and some sort of dairy free milk stuff (soya, coconut, almond etc.); it is surprising just how many people require gluten and/or dairy free nowadays. Word will soon get round.
Like many, trust few and always paddle you own canoe.

As a veteran of hundreds of cricket teas, I can confirm this is 100% correct.

The shop-bought produce usually sits there, half-eaten, limply sweating in an un-air conditioned pavilion before the bar staff bin it just after the game ends.

The home-made goods are usually scoffed before anyone gets a chance for seconds. And undoubtedly, the undisputed world heavyweight champion of the home made cricket tea, is the scone. Complete with fresh cream and jam, natch.

Worst club for cricket tea : Northfields CC. Who if you're lucky, might remember to nip out and grab some Tesco sarnies (to cut up and share), and a multipack of Walkers. And one year, did nothing but Mr.Kipling cakes. And a jug of water.

Best Club tea : Windsor Castle Royal Household. Especially if they have had a wedding or a function the night before, as the club grab the leftovers. Any chance of moving quickly in the field after tea is impossible.

I wonder how many realised that I was actually saying please don't give me any tips - but it would be churlish not to say thank you, so thank you. It's just that everyone (not on here) is telling me what to do/not do, serve/not serve. And whilst it would be daft not to listen to all suggestions, I need to find my own way on what works best. Not running before I can walk etc.

I have asked that the visitors that have said they'll write a Trip Advisor review, don't! Let's keep it a secret, I say. I would HAVE to read them if they did and I'm not tough enough for any bad ones yet. Of all the people that have visited so far, I've had one unhappy person because I didn't have any decaff tea. I wish I could do his voice but it was a sort of nasally anorak type if you can understand that. "I consider myself to be an expert on tearooms having visited most in the South East, and this is the first one that hasn't provided decaffeinated tea" I did apologise and explain that we were new and learning and if he'd like to come back next week, he could have one on the house but he comes from Kent and won't be back in the area. I then got flustered and gave him change for a tenner instead of twenty and he and his wife left without saying goodbye. At least I have my tag line now "The only tearoom in the South that doesn't do decaff tea!" It's good to be different, right?

I realised, but I thought I'd say anyway. Especially when coffee is so very often got completely wrong.

Keep up the good work. Learning is fun :-)

I think I'm sorted on the coffee. Getting it from these lovely people http://castironroasters.com/pages/about-us as I'm trying to source as much as I can from local suppliers. Only thing about the coffee is it's probably too specialised for the average Joe Public. Apparently the Kenyan, which I sell along with one from Nicaragua, tastes of clean fresh forest fruits combined with the sweetness of orange blossom honey and produces a wonderful complex coffee with full body and long mouth feel! Don't get it myself...

And you're right - learning IS fun and everyone, except Disgusted from Tunbridge Wells has been lovely.

You won't get any advice from me on the subject of tea - I can't stand the stuff.

Love that tag line Ziggy and you described my voice very well there, by the way my wife was truly furious ! :-)
