A GREAT ESCAPE?

Post by brian lewis »

Hampshire CCC..... I thought they were gone, gone, gone but won 3 of the last 5 games and stay up by 2 points! Bransgrove's dream of winning the Championship in 5 years stays alive - just!.

Yes...fantastic news, isn't it?

There is a kind of weird justice in that it was Yorkshire who prevented Hampshire winning the Championship for a second year running back in about 1972 ish??
Jackie Hampshire, captain of Yorkshire, was so intransigent about getting out on the field of play when the weather and umpires allowed (in the final match of the season) that further play became untenable and we missed out to Worcestershire iirc.

This time it was Yorkshire paying us back in part by doing the deed against Sussex that was instrumental in us avoiding the drop.

74 IIRC. Norman Gifford blotted his copybook forever (with me) by claiming they deserved it. Hants absolutely battered Worc @ United Services inside 2 days from memory. The weather ruined the last 2 Hants games & prevented a memorable feat.

Yes....terrific news! The openers in our second innings got their heads down (Jimmy Adams & Michael Carberry) and got us into a game winning position before knocking off the runs before lunch. I think it also helped that Jimmy Adams stepped down as Captain and Mark Vince took over for the last few games - suddenly there was a belief about the team and Liam Dawson (who was lent out to Essex earlier in the season) suddenly started to make runs as well as take wickets. Still think it was a mistake to keep Wheater and get rid of Bates, who is a vastly better keeper and got snapped up by Worchestershire? (I think?)

Worcestershire and Cheshire have combined to produce Worchestershire
