Re: Webster off?
I think Webster is great and wouldn't do this. However, if it is Clarke permanently, it is OK-ish (depending on fee); the previous rumour suggested it was just Clarke for another year's loan. Any clarification?

According to this article, the deal is very close for a straight swap deal for Clarke and £400k cash.Pompey Penguin wrote:I think Webster is great and wouldn't do this. Re: Webster off?
That would seem fair-ish. I still wouldn't do it in a vacuum, but also wouldn't want to stand in Webster's way of a big jump up the leagues.Claygate wrote:According to this article, the deal is very close for a straight swap deal for Clarke and £400k cash.

And also a huge leap in wages. Good luck to the lad. Imagine we'll see him in the Premiership sometime soon.Pompey Penguin wrote:wouldn't want to stand in Webster's way of a big jump up the leagues.

Re: Webster off?
Good deal for all concerned I feel on face value.
Good for Webster who is 21 and need to progress up the leagues.
Good for Clarke as he is 19 and can progress at Fratton and look to make the leap back up as Webster is doing.
Good for the Pompey Academy as it demonstrates again that players progress into careers.
Good for Paul Cook as he gets a player that he trusts and cash to help rebuild the squad.
Good for PFC finances (Tony Brown will be happy)
And good on Gary Waddock for rescuing Webster's career at Fratton.

Re: Webster off?
This season was his best season (admittedly the first in his rightful position) but will he do it again (I certainly hope so) but with only a year left on his contract and a good fee it has to be thanks Adam but off you go.
Re: Webster off?
I'm gutted.
You don't often get defenders of such high quality through a League Two Academy outfit.
I'm glad for him......but I'm personally distraught at seeing such a top, top guy leaving us.
Well at least Clarke is a promising youngster who may well develop into a very good player.

Hacked off tbh, we're losing a gifted player & getting a very inferior version.

Re: Webster off?
Is he that inferior? I think I'm right in saying that of all the various starting combinations of centre backs (Webster, Burgess, Clarke, Whatmough & Barton), the pairing of Burgess & Clarke was used 30 times, so over half the available games, and far more than any other individual combination. Remember too that Clarke was injured, so may well have played more games than he actually did, had he been fit. It seems that Mr Cook rates him higher than you do.pompeygunner wrote:+1.Earl Grey wrote:I'm gutted.

Re: Webster off?
I think part of this was because Clarke was the only naturally left-sided CB; when Webster and Burgess played together, Webster played left side, although it is not his preferred position. Although (I think) Webster is a better player, Clarke does give the defence L/R balance.

Re: Webster off?
I like this: Webster is the better footballer in my view but partnerships are made of complementing qualities. The stats from Donald on POL demonstrate this well:Pompey Penguin wrote:I think part of this was because Clarke was the only naturally left-sided CB; when Webster and Burgess played together, Webster played left side, although it is not his preferred position. Burgess & Webster starts:
Won 47% (9)
Drew 42% (8)
Lost 11% (2)
Conceded 0.9 goals per game (18 in 19)
Burgess & Clarke starts:
Won 53% (10)
Drew 26% (5)
Lost 21% (4)
Conceded 0.9 goals per game (18 in 19)

Re: Webster off?
Trust me board members, I'm confident we've done very well out of this deal. Another reason to trust in Cook, especially following his recent comments about Webster - i.e. "I cant believe a big club hasn't come after Adam yet, and he should be playing in the Premiership'. Engineered?
