Chesterfield have rejected two bids from Portsmouth for midfielder Jay O'Shea.

Press Association Sport understands neither offer was close to the Spireites valuation of the player while Chesterfield chief executive Chris Turner insists the club do not want to sell the 27-year-old, who has a year remaining on his contract at the Proact Stadium.

Portsmouth manager Paul Cook, who left Chesterfield a year ago to take over at Fratton Park, is expected to return with an improved bid and the matter is set to be discussed with Blues boss Danny Wilson upon his return from holiday on Thursday.

"The player has been chased for the last two weeks. We've had two offers and knocked them both back," said Turner.

"We don't want the player to leave the club but it's hard to say. I'll put the ball in Danny's court, he's the manager. If Danny says the player wants to go, he's been offered X and it's a great deal then he'll go.

"If Danny says he doesn't want him to go then he stays. It's as simple as that. But the problem becomes when the player knows what he's going to get paid at the next club and I don't know how you stop that, it happens everywhere."

Cook knows O'Shea well from his time in charge of Chesterfield having signed him, initially on loan, from MK Dons in January 2013.

O'Shea was a key figure during the Spireites' League Two title-winning season the following year. Indeed, the Irishman scored the goals in a 2-0 win at Burton which clinched promotion for Cook's side.

After failing to get Portsmouth out of League Two at the first attempt this season, it seems Cook could be be trying to sign players who have been there and done it and the move for O'Shea is not the first time he has returned to raid his former club, having enticed winger Gary Roberts from Chesterfield to Fratton Park shortly after his departure to the south coast.
