OT - Surprising things

Post by Earl Grey »

Thought the board needed livening up with something so I hope this thread spawns some more surprising things.

My surprising thing is that there exists a photo of the Duke of Wellington, the bloke who did most of his good work in the late 1700s and early 1800s, before photography was 'invented'.

As you can see, Stephen Fry makes quite a good Wellington as far as looks are concerned (see youtube clip below).

I walk my dog most days by Wellingtonia Avenue, which is an avenue of Wellingtonia pines (also known as giant redwoods).

The avenue was planted in the mid 19th century in honour of the Duke of Wellington, is just over 1km long and it is rumoured that one tree was planted for each regiment at the battle of Waterloo.

The trees are extremely large, although in redwood terms are still only babies!

Also surprising to find out The Duke of Wellington is a Time Lord known as "The Doctor"

I'll be back last week to give y'all some more details on this revelation.

Ah, but did you know he had a type of footwear named after him?

What, you did know? Oh.

Sorry.

So, did you know that there is a small town just north of Portsmouth named after his most famous victory?

I'm not as good at this as some others, am I?

Not only that but there was a song about it that won the 1974 Eurovision song contest in Brighton :D

I believe it was also possible to store beef inside him.

Now if I'd said pork that might have been funny.
