Would you watch a semi-final run on VHS 24 years later

Post by Quantum of Stowmarket »

If your team (in this case Portsmouth, but also in general from a neutral perspective) had a run in a major competition and they released a video of it, would you be persuaded to buy, or even watch it.

Back in 1992, when this club had a very good run in the FA Cup and very nearly won it (you would have beaten Sunderland ?) a special edition VHS tape was released featuring every round and nearly every game with it, and I've got it at home somewhere but haven't watched it for a couple of years.

Just wondered if it were possible to own for yourselves now would you bother to watch ? We ourselves had a good run as well, as we were also beaten by eventual winners Liverpool, but not until a after a replay and very nearly winning the first game at Portman Road. It's simply gathering dust and I don't think it's ever been released on DVD, so something of a collectors item.

I don't remember all the Portsmouth games but there's the Forest game in the last eight and first match with Liverpool in the semi-final (but think the replay wasn't included for some reason, :? will have to check when possible.

Obviously there's a lot of games that wouldn't interest people (games involving other clubs, who wants to see Enfield and Kidderminster from Round One for example) but something of a must-see for fans of the clubs that really made an impact.

(You could ask the question on a Liverpool forum but how often were they winning things around that time, it must have seemed just another year for them ?) No offence to Portsmouth fans but around that time the club made little impact at least in cup competition. In retrospect you'd look back and think "bl**dy hell that was us"

I camped out in Frogmore Road to get my ticket for the Forest QF (was actually first in the queue) and was at both Highbury and Villa Park for the SF/Replay. Have both of the latter on VHS but have never been able to bring myself to watch them as the memory is too painful.

I've got my VHS of both games somewhere. I was also at both matches, and have rewatched the highlights of the first game a few times. Never watched the replay though. That game was a real kidney punch.

Interesting stuff as I was just this week looking at my VHS and the 2 or 3 tapes I have been wondering if I should get rid.
I couldn't come up with an answer so I still have it hooked up. I guess the real solution is to transfer the tapes to the current format or buy dvd replacements. But that's tough as I have to admit to not watching them for shedloads of years but not wanting to not have them available either.
I'm stumped!

I will say on a similar note that around 5 yrs back I dumped about 50 cassette tapes and have not missed them. I did replace perhaps the top 10 with iTunes versions.

For the record, in VHS I have some martial arts stuff which would cost me over $100 to replace with dvd....Blackadder series 3 & 4 and specials and The Clash Rude Boy and Stevie Ray Vaughn Live at The El Mocambo....how do you dump that?

We used to own a Beta VCR and when those machines started to disappear I called a company that specialised in turning all your Beta (or VHS) cassettes into DVDs I got put right off by the asking price which was around £25 per tape iirc.Anyway it was prohibitively expensive so I just ditched them to a charity shop for the commercial tapes and the skip for the ones I recorded off camera or TV.

If the Forest game was the one where Mark Crossley dropped a cross and gifted us the winning goal, then I was there with my son. I also seem to remember a young Roy Keane playing well for Forest.

The result of replayed semi final at Villa Park was one of my lowest moments as a Pompey Supporter. After the game we went into Birmingham Centre to get a Curry, I cannot remember feeling as bad as that after a Pompey match
