FAO Guitar dudes

Post by The Cincinnati Kid »

Good day fellow axemen. So I've got a bit of money burning a hole in my pocket and its time to buy "that" guitar....you know...the one you could never really justify spending a wad on because there were other more important things to do.
Anyhoo....having looked at a bunch of Martins and Taylors which seem to be THE premier American made acoustics (I want an acoustic)...I'm very unimpressed. I mean fer sure, the Martins are superbly built and sound fantastic but for prices in the 1500-4000US range, their design seems spectacularly boring. Most of them I could not pick out from a random bunch of 20 other guitars. For that kind of moolah I'm expecting a bit more in the way of décor and detail.
Anyhoo....any of you have any off brand reccs?
Looking at Breedlove but could use some more ideas.

Just bought an Epiphone J200 Artist - basically an EJ200 without the pickup.
SOUNDS MASSIVE, and it, well, is massive too.
I finger pick a lot nowadays, not used a plectrum in years and it's even good for that. Sparkly high strings and quality bass.

I've owned a lot of acoustics, Epiphone and Yamaha dreadnaughts, takamine cutaways an Aria bowlback...none of them cheap.... the J200 is the best bar none.

Cheers Pompski.....already own an Epiphone electric hollow body which has been my #1 for years....in fact I've logged more hrs on it than 2 wives put together (bwahahahahaha)...so Epiphones out. Don't want a Yamaha but i'll add Takamine to my list of things to look at ...I do want that cutaway. Interesting on your progression to fingerpicking as my course is slowly moving in that direction also, though I still flatpick a lot.
I'm sure you already peruse the youtube instructional vids that those very helpful Guitar tutorial guys put out and just in case you've missed this guy...I use a lot of his stuff. Thank goodness for these great folks that take the time to do this! Here's one of his more difficult projects but he's got a shedload of stuff out there for all skill levels.

Let me know what you think. Playing a Takamine too innit?

My finger pick technique is self taught... or rather picked up... and I don't really play anyone else's tunes, just my own made up songs so no, not seen that guy before.
To be honest I don't know what I am playing half the time but I know it sounds right! I can't be bothered to sit through tutorials like that but I'm sure you'll be a better player than I if you can pick up techniques from them.

The Takamine I had looked nice but did sounded a bit flat, unlike the J200.

Hi from a newbie.

I can't really recommend a guitar but you'd do well to get to these people for good info before they close up shop. http://www.mi-pro.co.uk/news/read/chand ... ing/021482

As sure as cotton pickin' hell, there ain't no Cincinnati the last time I looked at a UK map, robpeck! Welcome to the MB by the way - if you're lucky and you wait around, you may be able to check out 'Late Night with the Cincinnati Kid'. It's usually full of great music with an emphasis on wimmin and great guitar licks from guys like BB King - despite living in Cincinnati, he's a Pompey boy gone feral......

I like the Ovation Adamas with the carbon fibre top. For finger-picking the notes are just so clear and separate. Ideally I'd like a wider neck to suit my big muscular hands. Maybe if I ask them nicely they'll build me one?

Interesting call there CS....how's the non wood top when unplugged.....I do like the look of those fer sure.
And the narrow neck will suit my small feminine girly hands just fine

Yeah I mostly play unplugged. But with fingerpicks. The tone is very bright and clean. It does depend a bit on the strings. I use nanowebs. You have to try it for yourself really if you can find one locally.
