Chekatrade tonite
In view of our recent debacles, anybody agree that tonight's game perhaps takes on a new meaning? This much maligned competition has been kicked into touch by most supporters all over but perhaps we need to use it in an effort to 'right some wrongs'. I'm sure, like me, many of our supporters will be watching 'very closely' our approach to the game by both players and manager!!

Smith misses a penalty inside the forst 10 minutes and then Rovers contrive to miss an open goal from 4 yards out. Still 0-0 after 25 mins.

Match Report:
We won.
Does that mean we get to play again or is our record in this competition so bad that it's just a consolation win?

Looks like if Reading beat Yeovil tomorrow night by more than one goal, we'll be 2nd in the group and qualify for the knockout phase. A 1-0 Reading win will also see us through on greater goals scored. A 2-1 Reading win will put Yeovil through ahead of us.Earl Grey wrote:Match Report:

2nd place in the group guarantees an away fixture in the knockout phase.

Re: Chekatrade tonite
Smith looked like a lost soul when it was one up front, however when Hunt came on he improved massively, he should have set up the opening goal (apart from his penalty miss) with a pass which put it on a plate only for Rose & Hunt to put each other off in front of an empty net. The goal came out of the blue, an exocet missile of a shot which got us all to our feet. Bristol Rovers were much more incisive than Pompey, we were back to our old ways playing the ball ineffectively around a packed defence. We haven't got one player who can actually take the ball forward our whole game relies on passing, sometimes for passings sake. Whatmough looked solid with his headers and produced a wonderful tackle in the box to thwart a goal chance. At least we got the win.

Goal by Naismith apparently - or 'exocet missle' referred to by 'pompeymick'.....pompeymick wrote:Smith looked like a lost soul when it was one up front, however when Hunt came on he improved massively, he should have set up the opening goal (apart from his penalty miss) with a pass which put it on a plate only for Rose & Hunt to put each other off in front of an empty net. Just seen the goal via a facebook link. Certainly a decent hit from 35 yards or so. Right in the middle of the goal. Slightly fortunate - looked like the keeper was either unsighted or just slipped.pomp 'n circumstance wrote:Goal by Naismith apparently - or 'exocet missle' referred to by 'pompeymick'.....pompeymick wrote:Smith looked like a lost soul when it was one up front, however when Hunt came on he improved massively, he should have set up the opening goal (apart from his penalty miss) with a pass which put it on a plate only for Rose & Hunt to put each other off in front of an empty net. As clear cut penalty as you'll ever see too. Not so much malicious, just hopelessly mistimed by the keeper, with Smith running miles away from goal. Not a great kick from Smith to take advantage though.

Possibly a good thing. If we'd ended up second:-
Southampton U21 v. Reading U21
