I willingly accept the admonishment and correct the original text by prepending "It has been reported today...".
However, the thinly disguised innuendo surrounding the words "withdraw" and "entering" still stands, as does the point about his relationship with Europeans. Let us now draw a veil over this as I certainly wouldn't want to be accused of pedantry.

I agree; the thought of Nigel entering and withdrawing has put me off my cup of tea.
