Good move all round, who's next to re-sign?

A player who definitely deserves reward for his efforts last season.

Sign Evans, lose Stevens, so no proper, decent FBs on the team. Don't sign Doyle. I'd love to read Cook's mind, but I am more and more thinking 3-4-3 for next season.

Young Mr Whatmough, I would hope.

Absolutely. Best defender we have on the books.

That's quite some praise, given that we have Messrs Burgess and Clarke. :)

S'funny...

I've been thinking the same thing. I know we're not Chelsea, but if 3-5-2 not fancied, but we've 3 really good CB's and a lack of out & out full-backs - and a plethora of attacking midfielders, is it worth a go?

Burgess-Whatmough-Clarke

Evans-Rose-Aborah-Naismith?

But play as they do - with 2 aggressive midfielders, rather than 3 strikers, those 2 behind 1 forward (Hazard & Pedro to Costa).

Baker-Bennett (Roberts/Lowe back up) & Lalkovic.

Eoin Doyle? - or would Chaplin or Kabamba link up better in this system - wouldn't mind seeing it tried pre-season. But to be honest, would be a 'bit of a surprise'!

Could Naismith play there *?* - or does it curtail him too much? (left side of the 4). Still got Kabamba, Chaplin. And Linganzi (if signed) for central/holding midfield. It's a completely different system though.

But am wondering if it takes less adapting from 4-2-3-1 than 3-5-2 does (even if during a game). If the former, TWO attacking midfielders have to come off, and a CB goes on, and a forward - part of the reason he's only switched to it a couple of times - it uses up 2 subs.

But haven't thought through whether 3-4-3 easily becomes 4-2-3-1 so much, depends on the personnel (of course). If it's only really Evans pushing up, and Whatmough coming on for one attacking midfielder, then yes? We sort of did it at home a couple of times last season. (When players got injured).

Really wouldn't want Naismith's role changed. He needs to be predominantly final 3rd of the pitch IMO. Thats where he's outstanding.

No mention above of Enda Stevens - possibly because he was supposed to be signing up elsewhere - possibly in the Championship for more money.

But he does not appear to have signed for another club yet?

He was selected for the EFL Team of the Season. He's a very good player.

Perhaps we can still renew his contract? Perhaps he is waiting to see if the Eisner deal goes through and we can offer more money?

Or maybe he is just on holiday......

Thought Stevens was off to Sheff Utd, but maybe they are waiting to see what happens with Eisner?

I think technically Stevens' contract doesn't expire until the end of May, therefore expect an announcement on 1st June. Although that would also be true of Doyle, maybe he just went early.

I stand by that. Big Jack's the best defender we have on the books.
Of the three of them, Whatmough's the best in the air, his tackling and mobility is as good as Burgess and Clarke. Burgess may be a little better carrying the ball forward than the other two and you can argue Clarke's positional discipline is better than the other two but overall Whatmough is defensively the best imho. Burgess and Clarke are both very, very good as well and there isn't that much between them so I'm inclined to agree with Pompey Penguin that 3-4-3 would work well but you need back up and Tom Davies isn't as suitable for that type of formation.

Now announced on official site - pity about that.
