Unofficially, we are now safe!
EFL League One was introduced for the 2004-2005 season. Since then, no team with 52 points or more has been relegated, so I'd say it is time to open a decent bottle of claret and light up a cigar!

As good as that, plus the ability to score goals would be amazing. Maybe in a couple of seasons?

Two teams in English football I know of have been relegated on 52 points in a 46 game season in the last 25 years - Fulham and Millwall (when Pompey won at Huddersfield with a Deon Burton goal to send them down). Fulham were relegated from Division Two (3rd Tier) with 4 teams being relegated. Millwall from Division One (2nd tier) with 3 teams being relegated.Selsey Bill wrote:EFL League One was introduced for the 2004-2005 season. Almost safe but 1 more win required for true beachwear status.

That we are eighth, and just a handful of points off the play-offs, is ridiculous when you consider the injuries we have suffered and the awful football we have played at times. It just demonstrates that, after the top three, this is a pretty poor league this year. With a bit more luck and (most importantly) a couple of quality attacking signings we should be challenging near the top next year.
This is going to be one of those leagues where whoever misses out on automatic promotion is going to feel very hard done by if they don't win the play-offs. I suspect that this will be Shrewsbury, and it is easy to see them losing in the play-offs, falling apart over the summer and then struggling next year (they were one of the favourites for relegation this season). You would have to feel sorry for their fans if this turns out to be their big chance and it drifts away.

Assuming that we get to that stage, will be interesting to see the team's attitude. I suppose whilst there is still a chance of reaching the playoffs the players should still be 'up for it'.Lost in Transportation wrote: Almost safe but 1 more win required for true beachwear status.

It's not just the play-offs; they should be aware that they are playing for next season. Clarke is a lock (assuming he stays) and probably Pitman and Lowe can be reasonably sure about being first choice in August. The rest of them are playing for contracts (e.g. Naismith), status (e.g. Close) or both (e.g. Haunstrup). A strong last nine games could make a huge difference to Jackett's thoughts entering the summer.Selsey Bill wrote:Assuming that we get to that stage, will be interesting to see the team's attitude.
