Walker is not a centre back, and Sterling is *****. But it wouldn't matter if we had a team full of world-beating, same as we couldn't win Eurovision if Lennon and Harrison arose from the grave and the Beatles represented the UK.

See what Kane can do when he's not wrestled to the ground. Those VAR guys should've gone to spec savers.

I think (hope) that the nerves of the occasion got to him - Harry Maguire admitted he was nervous for his WC debut, and it looks like Lingard was too, particularly the far post cross where he missed the target completely.

On the face of it, you think that's just a little paranoia.

But then you see a Tunisian bloke walk into Walker's arm, get a penalty and VAR don't bat an eyelid, whilst Kane is rugby-tackled to the floor on multiple occasions, VAR still don't bat an eyelid, and you just think - really? Is it cos we is English?

I hope there is some mechanism for pointing these things out to FIFA - but then again, do they want to know?

This is one of the reasons tournament football is so weird. Frist half, Tunisia played reasonably high up the pitch, and England found room behind, but second half they moved into full defensive mode and gave up any interest in any attacking intent. Unfortunately, England do not have the players like Messi or David Silva who can pick apart packed defences, and a set piece always looked like our best chance. Expect more of the same against Panama on Sunday. However, after that and as the tournament progresses we will play better teams (and teams better than England) who will want to attack, and this will allow England to play to their strength, which is counter-attacking and using the pace of Sterling, Lingard, etc. On the down side, it will also increase pressure on England's somewhat dodgy defence. The entire game will be completely different, and how teams have done in games like Tunisia will have no bearing on how they perform in the later stages. More than ever, it is one game at a time and move on.

Twice in the game England had free kicks in good positions, and Young and Trippier each had a go with pretty feeble efforts that wouldn't have scored even if on target. Didn't understand why Kane didn't have a shot from either of those as he at least can hit the ball hard.

There has been a lot of talk over the years about when an African team might win a World Cup. Tunisia are the highest ranked African team in this WC, and on the that basis the answer is never. Tournaments are not won by teams that do not believe that they are good enough to do so, and certainly not by teams that don't think they are even good enough to give England a fair contest. However unrealistic, winners have stupid levels of self-belief and don't suffer from an interiority complex from the start.

The thing that made me laugh most is that in the first 20 minutes when we were playing well the commentators were saying it's great we have this system all the players k ow it, it's flexible and can cope with any situation. Second half when it looked like a draw was inevitable as Tunisia put the wall up all of a sudden it's the system doesn't work there is no point playing it. Pundits should write down what they say so they can contradict themselves, but then it was keown
And sterling had a shocker I think he gave it away every time he had it

Sterling is a case in point of a player who needs room in which to run if he is going to be effective. One-on-one his pace and balance are a nightmare for defenders, but when crowded out he has little to offer. Rashford, or even Wellbeck, would probably be better options against very defensive teams. BTW, it's interesting to talk to Man City supporters, who see him every week, about Sterling; they admire what he creates, but get very frustrated with his inability to shoot or score anything that isn't a tap-in. It is amazing that someone who is so controlled when playing with the ball then gets his legs in all sorts of a mess when it is time to shoot.

Tunisia's second half tactics killed the game, it's pretty hard to break that kind of defending down (even Messi struggled the other day).

I think Rose should be played ahead of Young - a right footed left wingback means he's always cutting back onto his right foot. And Alli should have come off at half time as he was clearly not 100% in the second half.

Whole tournament looks wide open to me.

Just watched the two afternoon games. Japan & Colombia and Poland & Senegal. Nothing to see there, although Colombia's plans were ruined by a 3rd minute penalty and sending off, and they could be better than they were today. One of these four will be England's opponent in the last 16 (all being well v. Pananma!). Whilst they are not useless teams, England's path to the 1/4-finals could be a lot more difficult than this, and it is a good opportunity.

Re the Colombia match, I thought the rule was that only under exceptional circumstances would the ref give a pen AND send the offending player off. The double jeopardy thing!
Ah...edit. Just seen this...

It seems deliberate handball is one of the offences that means you get a red as well as a pen.
