Blackpool

Post by eltorrro »

It was going to happen at sometime...what an abysmal game of football..Pompey made Blackpool look good...actually, NO, neither sides looked good and Pompey were dire. What a difference the loss of two players can make, Thompson and Hawkins. However, I have to say I think KJ made an error with his team selection in moving Evans to a holding mf and including Green, who had a total shocker...might as well not been on the pitch. And when KJ did make a change he put Cannon up front and left Evans back?? KJ needs to think long and hard with regard new contracts for some of these guys because some will be of no use whatsoever should we get to the Championship. 8)

Spot on. Saved me the bother. Was it an off day? Or the sign of things to come? With our main rivals sharing the points we are still in a strong position. But we cannot afford many more days like this. Andy Cannon showed some bright touches. Time will tell.

Apart from the result, this was a worrying performance and highlighted some key issues. Its clear that Ben Thompson was a much more important player and influence than we imagined. We missed his energy and drive sorely today and the midfield was very poor as a consequence until Cannon came on and showed some of what was missing this afternoon. Andre Green looked like a fish out of water frankly and didn't have a clue what to do in the attacking midfield role he was given. We also missed Brown who is such a valuable partner for Curtis and a key defender. Donohue is not a proper full back and gets caught out position-wise which brought their goal. He also goes in for long hopeful balls out of defence whereas Brown is much more skilful and can link up with Curtis well. The same goes for Walkes as far as linking up with Lowe is concerned and there again we missed Nathan Thompson on the overlaps in particular.

A really disappointing performance, especially in the first half.

We huffed and puffed in the second half, and to be fair were a bit unlucky not to get at least one goal, but it was all rather rushed and out of control.

I think that we missed a trick by not bringing on Louis Dennis after half time to replace Andre Green, who had a torrid time in attacking centre midfield. Dennis has been playing really well in attacking centre midfield in the Checkatrade team, and I think would have given us the stability and control that we desperately needed.

I hope that he is given the chance to show what he can do sooner rather than later.

Also I don't think that switching Jamal Lowe inside when Wheeler came on was a good move. Jamal is better playing wider.

Not a good afternoon, but every team has the occasional poor match.

Two Pompey shots on target in the whole game with the first being after 85 minutes. No wonder Naylor called it Pompey's worst performance of the season - according The News.

Listening to Guy Whittingham on the BBC Radio Solent commentary, he said it was not just that we missed Ben Thomson. He felt that moving Evans deeper for this match did not help. And his replacement, Green, simply did not fit into his role. Curtis also looked to be particularly absent for whatever reason - probably the tight Blackpool defence.

These are matters for the manager, just as much as the players. Kenny Jackett will have seen the players during the week but still chose this particular line-up for the match. His selection and set-up was clearly wrong. He has some thinking to do before the game at Oxford.

As someone has said on another website, this group of players would have trouble surviving in the Championship if they played like yesterday. But, with new players arriving, injured players returning and 19 games remaining, all is not lost.

Lets also not forget that from what can be called our "first choice team" lately we were not only missing Ben Thompson but also Nathan Thompson , Lee Brown and Oli Hawkins. Add to that we had Gareth Evans playing deeper in the defensive two and Green , a winger by trade , shoehorned into the attacking three. Then add into the mix Pitman up front who doesn't do as well as a lone striker as he does with someone up alongside him and it was clearly a very much changed Pompey line-up. Let's hope we can restore parity next week , although Oxford will be going into this game off the back of coming from 2-0 down at Fleetwood to draw 2-2.
