Europa League Final
What a logistical nightmare for all involved.
A venue 2500 miles away from the teams competing in it (who normally play 6 miles away from each other). No direct flights. And the Azerbaijani authorities only recommending flying to Georgia, then a 600km journey by car or train - with no official policing or guidance anywhere en route.
Arsenal have sold about 3500 tickets from a 6000 allocation, and Chelsea just 2000.
It’d be unreasonable to deny Baku the final, a city which is more than capable of hosting such an event. But in a near 70,000 seat stadium its not exactly going to be the most partisan crowd for a major European Final between two old rivals.
Cameramen and TV Directors are going to have their work cut out.

Re: Europa League Final
It's a crazy place to have the final. It's obvious which group of countries are going to provide the finalists. Should be in a city with good transport links.

Re: Europa League Final
Has to be money talking again like the world cup in Qatar, the major leagues are going to provide finalists , even if they were Italian its still 1000's of miles away, and for a player not even able to play because of politics in the region is a scandal
Re: Europa League Final
One of the arsenal players can't play because he's Armenian ... The whole thing is a joke

Re: Europa League Final
It would be very reasonable to deny Baku the final. Azerbaijan is an oppressive dictatorship with rulers that walk all over any hint of human rights.
From Amnesty International (2016) ' ... persecution of political dissent continued. Human rights organizations remained unable to resume their work. At least 18 prisoners of conscience remained in detention at the end of the year. Reprisals against independent journalists and activists persisted both in the country and abroad, while their family members also faced harassment and arrests. International human rights monitors were barred and expelled from the country. Reports of torture and other ill-treatment persisted.'
Azerbaijan consistently uses sport to try and present an acceptable face to the world (so-called "sport-washing") and sports governing bodies are happy to play along (as with other dictatorships) for the money and perks. F1 is the worst culprit, but football isn't far behind and no sport is innocent.
