Back in the saddle - 780 miles under lockdown

Some of you may recall a cycle ride from Middlesbrough to Southampton for Smile4Rich. That was 15 years ago this month but you may also remember that the team included a couple of Saints posters from the 606 days, including one 'the Aviator'. Well he (Frank) and I are back in the saddle trying to convince ourselves that we're still reasonably fit, and to raise some much needed funds for Smile4Wessex at a time when charities are really suffering.

Details of our challenge can be found at https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Team/TdFSequel

Any support would be hugely appreciated :thumb

Yes, time flies. In 2005 I was almost as old as 'The Aviator' is now, which means I'm now very old!

I've also calculated that to cover 780 miles my rear wheel needs to turn 587,340 times, which (at average gearing) means approximately 195,000 revolutions of the pedals.

And whilst riding a turbo trainer means there are no steep hills to climb, that means there are none to freewheel down the other side of either. In fact, riding on a turbo trainer is like riding on a constant gentle incline. There's no chance to coast as the resistance means the wheel stops turning almost the moment you stop pedalling. I hope to average circa 13.5mph which means sitting in the saddle pedalling for something like 58 hours.

Now given that I'm so old, you'd think I'd have been wise enough to work all this out BEFORE I suggested I'd do it, wouldn't you?

This is going to hurt - lots!

Makes the success all the more worthwhile. During the lock-down, I have to play a medley of cricket (from the garage as the kids hate the idea of fielding) where runs are scored from on/off drives - also football (both regular and US varieties) and kick-ball (football version of baseball. Total playing time in 100+ degree Phoenix heat is 2-3 hours a day, 7 days a week...... give me your bike ride any day

Thanks Bill, much appreciated. Am aiming to replicate the six days that it took to ride the 390 miles from 'Boro to Southampton in 2005. Did 50 today and my schedule for the next 5 days is 56 / 62 / 68 / 74 / 80 miles. Just wish I could do it out on the road rather than on the turbo trainer.

Every £ is very much appreciated mate. Can't imagine how difficult it must be for businesses like yours (and thousands of others of course) at present. Can only hope there's light at the end of the tunnel for you all. Keep Smiling!
