I've always thought he's the better keeper .

Re: Stevenage
It feels like it could be a long season - let's hope these 3 quality loans that are in the pipeline really are quality.

Re: Stevenage
Couldn’t agree with you more Parkfield Blue. We had a good defence 2 seasons ago, a weakened one last season, but is even worse this season! Everyone can see where our weakness in the squad is, but what has been done to address it? I’ve never ever been convinced that Raggett is a decent centre back, always a liability waiting to happen and like Bambi on ice. As for Downing, well he’s one of the worst defenders ever to pull on a blue shirt IMHO. I know we have Jack, but we can’t rush him back. Can’t Jackett move Naylor into defence and sign a new CB to partner him? Close could come back in the middle as an added foil to Morris. If anyone were to ask where we will we finish this season, I would say mid table at best.

Re: Stevenage
Apart from a few years at Walsall and MK Dons in the middle of the 2010s, Downing has only played part seasons and is the quintessential back-up CB. He should never be first choice for a team above the botton third of L1. He should only ever be filling in for cup games and covering suspensions. I assume that Whatmough is next in line to start, but I can't see him being able to play twice a week for a while.Claygate wrote: ↑Sun Aug 30, 2020 7:51 am Couldn’t agree with you more Parkfield Blue. I said in another thread that I think Naylor is heading towards being a CB. He has played there in the Championship, albeit for a relegated Burton side, and occasionally for Pompey. Three out of Morris, Close, Cannon and Evans would give us a lot of energy in the middle three. So I agree with you on that option.
Having said that, the back four yesterday was an experienced group. There was no excuse for the shambles we saw against a L2 side.

Re: Stevenage
I'd like to see that back four play and Big Mac play in the cup game before the curtain raiser.
I think in the play off games and some other games before the close down that there was a lack of communication at the back.
I wonder if Bass doesn't do all that much talking to the defenders Infront of him and maybe if Big Mac does more we might see an improvement.

Re: Stevenage
Even Bolton can play CB - and had looked very good in that position. But we are not exaclty over-subscribed in the right-back position, or left-back, or CB, or...........

Re: Stevenage
We only have 2 forwards on the books - that's a worry for me. Especially when Harrison seems to get more than his fair share of knocks.

Re: Stevenage
Don't forget Mnoga - this could be his breakthrough season. He can play right back or right central defence. To me he looks as strong as Whatmough was at that age.

Re: Stevenage
Looking at today's results, maybe we didn't do so bad after all. Lots of odd results and teams seem to be struggling to settle. It could be a very odd start to the leagure season.
