George Best.....

Post by The Cincinnati Kid »

...had long hair but I dont recall him ever having a man-bun, pigtails or even a pony tail. That was probably back in the days when men were men though...and we listened to decent music.

Which brings me to my favorite ever football quote from Georgie.

"I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered"

Must be off....old fart curmudgeon class starts soon.

Mine too...I found these I hadn't heard when I was looking up the exact text.

I used to go missing a lot... Miss Canada, Miss United Kingdom, Miss World.

In 1969 I gave up women and alcohol - it was the worst 20 minutes of my life.

My late Brother in law was very friendly with George Best. Sadly he too died as a result of his addiction to alcohol. However in the early seventies, He, George Best and someone else went together to Majorca on holiday. On one occasion there was a knock on the door and my Brother in law answered the door and a Journalist was there wanting to interview George, who said he was not interested. The journalist relied that he was prepared to pay £10,000 for the interview. My B in L told George this information. The reply apparently was "No, I can`t be bothered" and no ammount of reasoning would persuade him to change his mind. To put it in perspective at that time £10,000 would have bought you two new`Wimpey` semi detached houses. My B in L was a Car Dealer in Manchester and frequented the same Night Clubs as George and sold him many cars over the years. He survived longer than George but his bottle + of whiskey a day habit did for his body, he was 74 when he slipped away.

Yep, my favourite player.
he could take a tackle and just get on with it. No squinnying like today's big baby's.
Just a shame he couldn't control the booze.

I was lucky enough to live and work in Manchester for about a year 1969/70. George Best was just about at his peak (he was just about the best player I have ever seen live), carrying an aging United side and I was fortunate to watch a number of mid week games as I worked on a saturday. You could take a bus (of which there were many) from the centre of Manchester to Old Trafford. Pay your 4 shillings (might have been less) and get into the ground very easily. Those were the days, or were they?
