Running! - Anyone on here run \ jog at all?
After starting to play football again amazed how unfit I am. Thinking about starting running and just went for my first one and my god I don't get how people do this for fun! Does anyone here run and how long until it got easier (at least to the point you didn't feel like you were going to vomit \ your legs didn't feel like fire).

You need to walk before you can run! A good way to start in run 30secs walk 30secs a
Alternating for 20-30 mins.

As the cycling boys & girls always say, "training doesn't get easier, you just go faster".
On running, if you really are starting from zero, then it will get easier as you find a rhythm. Your breathing gets in tune with your leg movements, your form (style) improves and you actually feel OK pottering along. Of course, if you then want to go faster or keep your heartrate up, then you need to work harder and the pain returns.
My advice would be to mix things up as much as possible. Do different distances, routes, etc., including some hills and off-road stuff, to keep things interesting. Then when you go back to a standard road distance, you will be surprised how much you have improved.
Also, sign up to do park runs. They are free of charge, on a Saturday morning and only 5k, so not a great time commitment. Once registered, you can do any of them all over the country, so if away for a weekend one can be included for variety. You will see that there are a lot of people slower and less fit than you, but everyone is having a good time, and you will feel more confident. (There's one at The Racecourse, Northampton, which might be close for you).
Finally, if you are going to keep running, go to a specialist running shop, get your gait analysed and buy some proper shoes. They might help you go easier, but they will certainly help prevent injury.

Couch to 5k worked for me, then up to 10k. Builds you up slowly and develops your stamina. Mind you that was about 8 years ago...

I used to run quite a bit but have gone cold turkey for a number of years as I felt it just wasn’t good for me, I was creaking at the seams in my last race. For me there are much better ways to keep fit.

I agree, I do HIT quite a lot...less stress on the joints and not so many injuries. Plus it's over a lot quicker!richisbradders wrote: ↑Sat Aug 07, 2021 10:32 am I used to run quite a bit but have gone cold turkey for a number of years as I felt it just wasn’t good for me, I was creaking at the seams in my last race. Re: Running! - Anyone on here run \ jog at all?
Cheers for all the advice guys. One of the big recurring bits of advice I've seen from various places is to "build your base" and "don't do too much too soon".
I've been doing some "aerobic" training this week which is basically running until your Heart Rate gets to the point you get are close to anaerobic exercise and then walk until it drops to a lower level and rinse and repeat. The idea being that you're training your body to be more efficient and working at a level where you aren't completely knackering yourself. Managed to knock 4 minutes off my 5k time already (down from 46 to 42 minutes) this week although it is hard not to think you have more in the tank and push on at the ends but apparently long terms it's meant to be a great way to get going and not injure yourself. I'll keep it up for a month or so and see what the results are then maybe add some more speed work. Main priority is just keeping getting out the door at the moment and getting into a routine. Then I can look at pushing it a bit once I've built a solid base.

Nice one mate! As you get a bit fitter "3-2-1" training is a great way to knock time off.Sam_Brown wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 2:26 pm Cheers for all the advice guys. One of the big recurring bits of advice I've seen from various places is to "build your base" and "don't do too much too soon".

You run 3 minutes at just under your regular pace then 2 minutes slightly quicker than your regular pace and then 1 minute very fast/sprint.
Repeat until you finish your 5k. I knocked close to 2 and a half minutes off the first time I tried it

Ah brilliant thanks. Subscribed to both of those. I've just watched the first video and he explains it so much better than all the websites I've visited over the last few days.Pompey Penguin wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 3:29 pm Pleased to hear that you are doing well Sam.

Thanks appreciate it. Will certainly give that a go in time as well and glad you managed to knock some time off with it.Mr Dee wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 2:48 pmNice one mate! Park Runs are back, Great Social, always seem to go a bit faster when other people running, get slightly addictive - good to do when visiting other places as well

Unfortunately running/jogging is not particularly kind to the knees. I just stick to decent speed walking these days. Still good exercise.
