On this day in 1984
Mark Hateley bags one against Brazil, after a decent season in the 3rd tier of England football. John Barnes got a tap in or something too.
Can't imagine anyone from League One even getting close to Bisham Abbey these days, let alone full International duty with England.

Wasn't we in Division Two, now The Championship, which would have had us in the second tier of English football?Weybridge wrote: ↑Fri Jun 10, 2022 10:52 am Mark Hateley bags one against Brazil, after a decent season in the 3rd tier of England football. John Barnes got a tap in or something too.

I remember it really well actually because I kept looking at the England team line up in the paper. I was so proud that next to Hately's name was printed his club Portsmouth. Pompey actually had an England International, although he never played for us again after that.Weybridge wrote: ↑Fri Jun 10, 2022 1:38 pmYou're absolutely right! I seem to remember that one England game against Croatia we had 5 players in the starting line up and 1 in the Croatia team. One headline after the match read "Pompey 2 Croatia 0".

Wasn't it within a couple of weeks of that goal, Hateley signed for just under a million to Coventry or AC Milan..... brain getting muddled but I know both those clubs were in the mix...maybe we bought from Coventry and sold to AC.
Darn, should have researched before typing.
