BTG - Things to do in Bradford

Post by RubiconCSL »

Okay, okay, not the best of choices for a week end away I'll grant you. However, Ms Rubi jnr is oop north for 6 weeks on a prosthetics course. So, she's staying in Bradford. As last Tuesday was Mrs Rubi's and my 25th Wedding Anniversary, we were looking to go away for the week end anyway, so it sort of looked like a good idea.

Anyway, what can people recommend? I've heard that Saltaire is a must (UNESCO world heritage site or summet like that). What else is hiding away in the area that we really ought to go and see? We're staying in the centre of Bradford.

Thanks in advance.

Sadly, two things stop me from Accrington away tomorrow. One - a bit far. Two - Mrs Rubi would rather chew her own arm off than watch football.

You might want to avoid the Valley Parade area around lunchtime tomorrow.

Go to Leeds... The royal armouries is good.

Alternatively come to Sheffield for a ale tour... I'll be your guide... All I charge is an ale per pub.

The national coal mining museum is a good day out.

Alternatively hit the country side.

But to be blunt... West Yorkshires a shithole.

Holmfirth is not that far away - where they filmed Last of the Summer Wine and it also has a small vineyard which does tours of the wine making process.

That's more Bollywood than BAFTA!

I'm a member of English Heritage - you might try Brodsworth Hall & Gardens, Conisbrough Castle, Monk Bretton Priory or Roche Abbey. Harrogate and York are also fairly close.....Mrs Rubi deserves a break from Poland! Have you been the beneficiary of any of her prostetics by the way?

Well, Harrogate was very nice. Cream Tea at Bettys - apparently a very famous tea room and a 30 minute queue. Then on to Saltaire; although too late by then to go in and look around, it's an amazing place and well worth a better look around when/if time permits tomorrow.

Considering I was told the place is a pit, I'm pleasantly surprised. People here are very friendly and so are the motorists (which makes a change).

I guess, "don't believe everything you hear" is the phrase. Actually pretty nice here.
