Ben Thompson

Sources saying that he is coming to us on a season long loan from Millwall. 22 year old midfielder with one goal from 69 league appearances, mainly in League One.

Don't know much about him, but having had a quick butchers at Millwall fans' comments, sounds like he is a tough tackling midfielder, too good for League 1. Shame for the likes of Close, May and Rose, but could be exactly what we need.

Is tough tackling what we need or do we need a ball player? I know the two aren't mutually exclusive.

Last season almost all of Jackett's loan signings were "loan with option to buy" (or was this just the January loans?), and Jackett was clear that this was an important part of selecting a player. Anybody know if this applies to Wheeler and Thompson?

Having just listened to Neil Harris being interviewed about Ben Thompson, he was very keen to stress that the player has a big part to play in Millwall's future, and might perhaps even be a future Millwall captain. It could all be talk, but that doesn't sound like we will get an option to buy at a later stage.

Given how bad most of his loan signings have been I bet the parent club couldn't wait to get that clause in there!

Exactly my thought. But as you imply, if he's a ball winner it doesn't mean he can't hold the ball and pass the ball. Naylor's a good ball winner but seems incapable of passing it accurately which may often be that there's little in the way of options for him because of the way we're set up....so if this new guy can be available to receive ball and be creative too then that's just what the doctor ordered.

can't help but think this signing that Walkes is actually being considered now as a RB rather than as a central midfield partner for Naylor. Probably for the best but it does beg the question about Thompson and Walkes at RB.

still need some pace and creativity into the side because Thompson seems to be another industrious player over goal threat or creativity 7which is a helpful quality to have but not if the side consists of four solid defenders and seven Chris Burn / Mick Tait types.

good timing two with two away games coming up next week. I'd think an industrious midfield player alongside Naylor might be quite handy at Bristol and Donny next week even if he doesn't get a start today vs Oxford

AT LAST!! A ball player and playmaker...makes all the difference... MOM, deservedly so. And I think he will get better. Just need that nippy goalscorer now. 8)

Walkes will be a back up for Nathan Thompson when he's back fit again. Simples.

The way Pompey played on Saturday it looks like Ben Thompson is now going to sit in front of the back 4 and Naylor is being pushed forward....or maybe they're like weathermen and when one is forward the other drops in behind. Either way it provided us with a much more functional midfield although that may flatter us because Oxford were pretty much never going to contest midfield as they were trying to waste time right from the kick off. Only towards the end when they had to set up differently did we start to wobble a bit and not look so convincing in midfield.
