Seems a reasonable alternative to meaningless friendlies though I guess it means less meaningless friendlies against Brazil et al.

I understand there is a path to qualify for the Euros here somewhere, but I don't know the details. That seems to be part of the carrot to field a strong team and be competitive.
Meanwhile, Denmark are fielding non pros against Wales due to a dispute with their FA.
