World Athletics Championship, Doha

Post by Weybridge »

I hope FIFA are paying attention. This is the Qatari capital.

3rd largest global sporting event after the World Cup and the Olympics - and the stadium is empty. I’ve seen bigger crowds at West Leigh Park.

State of the art stadia and midnight kickoffs aren’t going to solve attendance problems like this.

I've said for a long time that playing the World Cup in a country ranked as low in the world as Qatar is and that has no footballing history will be a disaster. And that's before you even get onto the thorny subject of the climate .
Everyone says David Beckham is not very intelligent. No-one says that Professor Stephen Hawking is a rubbish footballer!

The attendance, the climate, the human cost of construction of stadia, the human rights records.......the whole thing is going to a right wheeze!

And now they think at the time of the women’s 100m final, fewer than 1000 people were in the stands - and many of those were journalists.

Tickets were given away free to the locals.
