Saw him several times, both at Staples Center and also in Seattle when the Supersonics were there (prior to their move to Oklahoma City). Massive loss to the game

Sorry all you Stateside Pompey fans but he's pretty much unknown here - and having done a quick Google on him, he has a questionable past both professionally among teammates who will acknowledge he had one of the worst shot conversion rates in the US basketball league history and in his personal life with misogynistic accusations in addition to rape accusations.
Not my sort of hero even if I had heard of him.
In any event, I'm afraid it doesn't warrant the BBC making it the main news item on a Monday morning.
There is pretty much just one genuinely global sport that a star performer would be worthy of major coverage. According to Worldatlas, basketball comes seventh down the list behind table tennis and volleyball and US "football" doesn't even make the top ten. Another case of what is considered big news in the US, the rest of the world expresses as......meh.
