COVID vaccine or new Pompey manager... Which will happen first?

Post by GreenBlue »

Silly question really but I think we will see a new manager before the vaccine.

Or alternatively - which will happen first, a successful vaccine or a successful Pompey manager??
Don't forget Russia already have a vaccine but whether it works is another matter, and equally is it safe?

Precisely PB.

Pompey have a manager at the moment; whether he is the right manager is debatable.

Similarly, we will soon have lots of vaccines. Who knows if any are genuine or just a load of snake oil pushed by pharma companies for profit and governments to forward a nationalist agenda. I am very pro-vaccination in general, but I won't be taking a Covid vaccine until there is a solid body of properly reviewed testing. We are starting to get more and more people catching Covid for the second time and others who have had it are showing reduced antibody responses (in the Imperial College study), both normal for a SARS-type virus for which long-term vaccines have never been successfuly produced.

And will either be effective? We've had a flu vaccine for around 70 years.

Covid vaccine. By which I mean one which has been properly tested for safety, and which instigates an antibody response.

Pompey will have new manager at the end of the season, unless there's some sort of miracle at Fratton Park.

I believe the Oxford Covid vaccine is nearing the end of its testing phase, and from the report I heard on the news, will be available to high priorities in December - they said something about having to train healthcare professionals in it use, which I guess is the last part of the legal acrobatics which need to be performed for any drug to be licensed.

Will it be a long-term vaccine? Doesn't sound like it. But what's better? Having to have a 6 monthly injection to keep antibody levels high, or this demi-existence that we're all in?

There has been little investment in finding a SARS vaccine, as SARS-CoV-1 isn't a major problem - it's basically disappeared, and was far easier to control. There were only ever 8000 confirmed cases, and it disappeared 7 or 8 months after it was first noted. No real point trying to find a vaccine for a disease that isn't affecting people.

There are over 150 different Covid (SARS-CoV-2) vaccines under development, according a quick Google search. The amount of money being thrown at this current virus is exponentially higher than any other coronavirus. Just because we have yet to find an effective coronavirus vaccine does not mean that it's impossible.

Flu isn't a coronavirus, it's (according to my Google search) an orthomyxovirus. The vaccine is effective against the flu strains that it is designed to work against - the flu virus mutates every year, meaning a new vaccine needs to be developed.

We have a flu epidemic in 2017 (I think), because the virus mutated very late, and the new strain was not included in the vaccine.

Wolves were given monkey gland injections prior to the game, and finished up losing 4 - 1. Stan Cullis was in that team.

Looking around to get more info, I come across the actions started some years earlier by Buckley, the Wolves manager, and then some other clubs were into the act, including Pompey !
Google Wolves/monkey glands and have a look there`s quite a few articles.
