I went to see Paul Merson and Jeff Stelling and the Kings Theatre for their talk show recently. It was very entertaining and enlightening listening to their yarns. It was obvious though that Paul Merson does have an affinity with Pompey, and not just because the show was in Portsmouth.

How on earth did Saints lose that match against Ipswich yesterday? They were clearly the better side and played some really nice football, although a lot of endless passing at times. I thought Southampton still had that Premiership 'polish' in their play and looked a good side. Ipswich were good as well and I thought this game showed the challenge we face next season, should we go up of course.

You will go up , probably as champions . We can’t score anything like the amount we should given the chances we create .
We can’t defend a lead and mentally I think we are very very fragile .

IMHO , we will be playing each other next year .

He always has positive things to say about Pompey. He was part of a massive part in the history of the club and at the stage it was in his career too it clearly meant a lot to him.
