In April 2007 Johnson was called upon to resign by the MPs for the city of Portsmouth after claiming in a column for GQ that the city was "one of the most depressed towns in Southern England, a place that is arguably too full of drugs, obesity, underachievement and Labour MPs"
So, not much progress in 250 years then.
In 1758, James Wolfe wrote:"The necessity of living in the midst of the diabolical citizens of Portsmouth is a real and unavoidable calamity. It is a doubt to me if there is such another collection of demons upon the whole earth."
I love the way that, against the current call for schoolkids to have compulsory sport for two hours per week, Boris wants schoolkids to have compulsory sports for two hours a day!
He's such a good advert for the well-tuned athletic frame.....not!
He pushes Ed Balls close for that Billy Bunter role should the BBC ever decide to bring the greedy Greyfriars pupil back......(Lawks alordy, bags I'm first at the Tuck Shop, tee hee!).
Stop looking for solutions to symptoms and start identifying the disease.

He's double bluffing - using eccentricity to make people think he's actually quite intelligent whereas, in fact, he's a twerp with little grip on political realities.
Having said that, I would love him to be the new Tory leader just for the mirth it will provide.
Do not be fooled - he has the worldly wisdom of a single cell organism.
...and, in respect of those who would cry "Evidence!", of course I have no factual basis for these comments but I do know a kn0bhead when I see one.
No evidence? For someone with designs on winning the votes of the nation his comments on the citizens of (at the very least) Hull, Liverpool and Portsmouth were fabulously inept. He makes Frankie Boyle seem like a man endowed with the sensitivity and tact of a grief counsellor.
He is no fool - Oxford degrees in Classics do not come in Cornflakes packets. But considering his greedy Tory class politics and his personal behaviour (Bullingdon Club loutishness and vandalism, comments about Liverpool and Portsmouth, adultery and lying about it afterwards), he is a swine.

Lately it occurs to me ... what a long, strange trip it's been

Is this as rock-solid as your "Male rowers given BMWs but not the women" story?
