OT - New pound coin
OK....competition time.
First one on the board to get a new pound coin in their pocket wins a virtual Royal Mint to suck.
Nice to see the knobbly old thruppenny bit still playing a part in the currency.
Actually, recalling the word 'thruppence' brings back memories...
Three Penny coin - Thruppenny bit
Sixpenny bit - tanner or bender
One shilling - bob
Two shilling coin - two bob or florin
Half a crown - half a dollar
Pound - quid or Sov
And there was the guinea which was 21 bob
Ahhhh - jumpers for goalposts etc.

Well I don't remember ever having a bender in my pocket! My fave was the thruppence though; something about the shape, colour maybe? That and the 10/- note I got for every birthday.
Thrupps is also a midlands term for lady pillows, as in thruppenny bits....t.... well, you get the idea.

Re: OT - New pound coin
I'm too young to remember anything but New Pence but I like this new design.
I am still concerned that there will be a child's scribble of some crap on the back though, or the offside rule or something else ridiculous that they seem to be adding to coins nowadays.
One thing I didn't realise until recently is you know all new coins have that horrible off-centre design on the backs, well maybe I am the only one who didn't know but if you put them all together they form the coat of arms.

2017 it comes into circulation isn't it?
I don't understand all this old money talk. I can just about remember the days before the £2 coin.

Re: OT - New pound coin
I seem to recall bitter opposition when the pound coin was first proposed.
Oddly, a dollar coin has been tried here a few times and has failed every time.....weird!

Silver 3d bits were favourites for the Christmas pud, remember them well.VFTH wrote:Is my memory playing tricks on me but I seem to remember a silver 3d bit before the joey.
Words ought to be a little wild, for they are the assault of thoughts on the unthinking.

only because your vending machines take notes, without that you'd be in coins with the rest of usThe Cincinnati Kid wrote:I seem to recall bitter opposition when the pound coin was first proposed.
