Southend 0 Pompey 2: Checkatrade Trophy

Goals from Dennis and Evans puts Pompey through in the Checkatrade Trophy. The team is really on a roll. Excellent result given the number of changes that were made to the team.

the other interesting thing to note is that Danny Rose was neither in the starting eleven or the squad. No idea what this means but it seems odd to me given that Evans played alongside May as a holding midfield and you'd have thought that Rose would have been a better option and given Evans the night off. Perhaps they didn't want to risk an injury and stop a transfer taking place?

On to the next round....

It looks like the other three teams left in the southern section of the trophy are:

Chelsea U21 or Peterborough
Oxford; and
Bristol Rovers.

and Port Vale, Man City U21, Sunderland and Bury make up the rest of the draw.

the next round is not split by North and South so Pompey could draw any of these teams.

Hoping that Peterborough knock out Chelsea U21 tomorrow .... Two games now from Wembley!

With regard to Danny Rose, Joe Gallen said in his post match interview that Rose is likely to leave the club shortly.

That was an impressive, professional performance against a full strength Southend United team who are lying just outside the play off places in League 1. Winning is infectious, and a mentality, and I love the fact that we keep marching on. What this result does show is the strength in depth we now have. To be able to make 10 changes and still get this result says something. And with regards to Danny Rose, he has been a great servant to the club. Shame we never got to say a proper goodbye to him at Fratton Park.

Danny Rose got really unlucky. Pompey were playing their best football of 2017-18 with Rose in the team, and then he broke his leg (partly due to refereeing incompetence), was out for the season and that was that. I wish him all the best wherever he is going.

BTW. Despite being full of reserves/U-21s, the Checkatrade Trophy is a first team cup competition and will take priority over league games. Which means that Luton (A) will be postponed again.

Apologies if it's been said already, but anyone know when the draw for the next round is?

Or maybe not. The News now saying the 1/4-final will be week starting 21st January. Luton (A) the week after.

I heard that the games would be played in two weeks time which would put the order as Oxford (a) Ssturday Checkatrade game midweek QPR (h) FA Cup on the Saturday and Luton (a) midweek.

Going to be a busy period and since Lowe, Wheeler and Canon are not eligible for the QPR game all could play vs Luton and have at least a week's rest. Cannon is only eligible for the league games so he can have nearly 10 days before the Luton game.
