Blackpool

Post by Rjk66 »

Hoping for 3 goals against Blackpool tomorrow as the two games I remember most against them both produced 3 goals each game for Pompey. First game was 2nd December 1967 in division 2, Pompey were first and Blackpool 2nd. A crowd of 35,038 with cliff portwood, Ray pointer and Mike travers scoring for the blues, and one in reply for Blackpool. Eventually we ended up 5th at the end of the season. In the 1980/81 season Alan Ball was player/coach for Blackpool before becoming Pompey manager in may 1984. We played Blackpool on the 24th January 1981 in front of 13,265, finishing at 3-3. Pompey went 2-0 up, then behind 3-2 before scoring a late equaliser. Alan Ball missed a penalty as well to let us off the hook. Your predictions for this game?

It's a game we should expect to win my worry is that we still have this habit of giving teams a goal start and at some time it's going to cost us hopefully not today
It will interesting how we line up I would like to see Pack start alongside Morrell and push Robertson behind Bishop as it gives us a more physical midfield
Also it could give Whyte an opportunity to prove doubters like myself that he was worth the pre season hype we were fed as so far he has totally failed to deliver that

I was at FP for the 1967 match. The roar following the first goal was heard as far away as the Harbour station. We had a very competitive team that season and were genuine promotion contenders until Ray Pointer had his leg broken.

I'll also go for 2-1 Pompey. It'll be an interesting couple of months coming up I think.

I was also at the 1967 game, standing in the north lower. I remember it being pretty packed and us winning but not much else.
For today I hope that we put the chances away!

I was at that game as well and I can't remember if we were also on Match of the Day as well. I seem to remember that we also played Blackpool in the old division 4 and drawing a similar sort of crowd, which I think was the one featured on Match of the Day. Can anyone else remember that or is it a figment of my imagination?

Thought Lane was out for two weeks ? Glad he isn’t
