Callum Lang & Tom Mcintyre

Post by Claygate »

Pompey are apparently close to signing Readings Tom Mcintyre (defender) on a free transfer and Callum Lang (attacker). The latter is being held up due to agreeing transfer fee.

Mcintrye is 25 and left footed. He is a useful utility player as he can play LB or DM.

I know we need an additional defender but do we really want another LB/CB a position where we are reasonably well covered. Bearing in mind Swanson being a long term injury and Rafferty again not available tomorrow surely the prudent recruitment would be a right sided player.

I think part of the thinking about the transfer window and the need for cover at centre back is that you take the best player available. The preference would be for a right sided central defender but if the best option is left footed then you take that.

Raggett and Shaughnessy are both right footed and Towler , Oglivie and McIntyre (if he signed) are left footed. You can create decent combinations therefore centrally with those five and McIntyre, Oglivie and Sparkes give you defensive left back cover too with Sparkes a more attacking option to play there.

Right back - is less of a specialist position than left back imho since more players are naturally right footed - and Pompey would have Rafferty as first choice with Shaughnessy (at a push) and others such as Devlin capable of playing there too whilst Swanson is out injured.

At least one site now saying that the deal is agreed and Lang is coming down for a medical on Monday. We shall see on Monday if it is true.

Eric Eisner on Twitter is now following Callum Lang. Looks like it is happening.

3 goals in his last 58 league appearances. Hardly what you'd describe as a prolific goalscorer 🙁

I'm not fussed about his last 58 games. If he joins our club, I shall be more interested in the games he plays for us.

To be fair he has been forced to play in the number 10 role which he was not suited to, his strength is on the wing where he is more prolific according to Wigwam fans.

When played consistently on the wing in 21/22 scored 18 with 10 assists so maybe lost his way a bit when played as a second striker
Must have something about him as he had captained Wigan for the last 2 season's
Let's be honest anything on the right wing is an improved on Whyte who looks now well down the pecking order

Think the Whyte situation is unfortunate and also a bit of an embarrassment for JM a who has been singing his praises, if it wasn’t for Kamara despite his inconsistency’s we would be struggling to fill that gap.Although Lane can play there I guess?

We signed Lane on the basis he was a right winger but Moushino switched him and Kamara so to all intents he is keeping Scully out of the team. A decision which has worked well
Also Devlin impressed last week as a right wingback last week

Looking at his stats. Moxon plays central midfield for Carlisle so unless that's as a 10 then we are I think well covered there are we not

Probably the pick of the players at Carlisle... Would mean we are leaving the window stronger than we went into it in the central midfield area. I think some of the signings we have made also have an eye on building a squad where we don't have to have a rebuild every summer.

Of course, but if you're buying the player to add goals to the team, would it not be preferable to get someone with recent form for doing just that?

Maybe JM sees Lang more as a provider, and someone else is inbound to add goals. The next few days will, I guess, answer that question.
