Going Up? What Then?

Post by SportMouth »

Let's say we DO go up and find ourselves in the Championship next season.....to quote Mekons...
'Where To Now?' As far as I can tell, we'd receive some 1.4 million pounds,,,is this enough?
Owners can be relied on to invest...how much..into the squad? Is this enough?
How many current first team players would 'cut it' in the Championship?
Perhaps I overestimate the strength of our opponents in the league above....I guess it's possible
we could compete with Rotherham/Sheff Weds/QPR/Millwall and Huddersfield....and get a draw
at home to Plymouth...after that it gets stickier...at least without significant investment.
WE have no power over what money comes in.....what the fans can do is show some understanding
and realise that our first season/s may well be a struggle..and make allowances.
Might all be academic....might get ejected through playoffs again....kinda guarantees we'll have
another season of vague hope next time. Nothing lasts forever anyway. PUP.

Don't you get £7m or £8m more just for being in the championship.

I don't think we will do anything Ipswich, it's possible. I think we are better placed than Wednesday and Rotherham as examples in the league above. The former especially had a team built for getting out of league one and no real plan.

Staying up and establishing ourselves in the championship should be the aim if we get promoted and you then build from there - the model won't change but we might spend a bit more.

I think many of the players we have still have room to grow in the league above which helps. I can see Paddy Lane being worth a chunk of money if he can make the step up for example - and some others too.

Ultimately if we do go up it won't be easy, but I dont think we will just be making up the numbers. Over time we can establish ourselves at that level again but I don't think we will be looking towards the premiership for a good while yet - and if we do pocket the money and go again.

I looked at the stats a while back and generally teams that go up as champions finish around mid table on average. There seems to be a lot of dross at the bottom of the championship.

Pompey 84.
I took the 14 million from a quick online search...may be outdated now.
Seriously doubt figure has risen to the 7-8 million you mention however.
Championship has fewer potential 'world beaters' but the general standard
is higher...kook at how we've faired against them in pre-season on in assorted
cups....they have often looked a class ahead of us.
If we lose Laine..and our loans go back to parent clubs,,,,who are we left with?
Some ageing pros whose level is...league one.
NOT being a misery guts...but we have to be realistic and know it will be a
mountain, not a molehill.

General standard among top 8 is as high as ever.
As stated in post..we could hold our own against bottom 6...
which means by definition we'd be in a relegation battle
from start.

Too early to talk about new players yet we need to be humble and take each game at a time and ignore the media hype saying we are the favourites to win the league. Weve got to keep our feet firmly on the ground and keep grinding out results as each match comes up starting on saturday at Charlton.IF we do manage to go up automatically which is what we are aiming for.I think though we have the nucleas of a side that could stay up a lot depends though on the recruperation of Poole, Morrell, Mc Intyre and Lowery, and whether they can get back to their best again? If not we are talking about making a lot of replacements it would be a plus to have Kamara in our side if we can get him?

Jam Tomorrow.
I agree....oddly enough, only a couple of .ago I looked at bookies odds for us...we were 2/1 shots....4 other teams
were rated more likely than us to go up. Am guessing as the games in hand have whittled away and our firm improved,
we are probably evens. You name 4..perhaps 5 players.....that leaves a large chuck of unfilled places for first game
next season. Concentrating on the here and now is of course the only way but.....promotion is a means to an end rather
than an end in itself.

good to know you are up to date with our squads ages.
I am sure that the likes of bishop and lang, yengi, poole and macintyre would appreciate being called ageing pros :thumb

The average age of the squad is 24.5 if you ignore the keepers who mature late only Pack Rafferty and Raggett are over 30
I feel at their best a good proportion of the players could hold their own at a mid table championship team which I would think be our target if promoted
Regarding Lang why would we sell to what would certainly be another championship team unless it’s a high enough fee to add more players to the squad and why if we get promoted would he not want at least on season there to enhance his reputation and value
Anyway let’s just get promoted first and worry about next season when it comes

Assume you mean Lane who I used as an example?

I was suggesting if we get promoted and he makes the step up (with us), he will be worth a wedge of money - that doesn't mean we have to sell him. We have signed players who we believe can develop and play at a higher level, ideally with us but ultimately the time will come where we get an offer we cannot refuse for someone and we will that money to reinvest it's the model for us and many other clubs.
