Sacked in the Morning

Interesting POD Cast on the Beeb at moment by Tony Pulis with the trials and tribulations of a football manager, I thought about DC and what he is going through at the moment with us. A lot of opposition fans are trying to reassure us that DC will come good and we should give him more time which is easy enough for them to say. However we may look back at this time a year from now top of the table and wondering why some of us questioned his capabilities. Although DC wont admit it he has been dealt a poor hand inheriting a depleted squad with Jacket also rans still left over, and little money in the kitty to make wholesale changes. I have no doubt we couldn't have a more hard working consensus manager which counts for something but needs to fix this team sooner rather than later.

Not sure that the Cowleys have recruited well for this year, but we don't know the background pressures and finances. Certainly, they were unlucky in being unable to offload one or two expensive players.

And the expensive ones that remain are not performing well at present - whatever the team formation.

As someone posted on another thread, it's going to be a long season......

I blow hot and cold on the Cowleys; much like their team really.

However, here's the thing. They have been in position for seven months and one transfer window. If the Cowleys are sacked, and someone else appointed, do they get one transfer window (January) and to the end of the season (five months) before they are sacked if we are not in the play-offs/whatever? And so it goes on, and you end up paying a load of managers and their assistants, etc. to not manage the club, which is salary budget that can't be spent on players. Plus you end of with lots of players signed by one manager who are not part of subsequent managers' plans, and are not making room for new signings. We have seen plenty of football club owners changing managers on a repeated basis, and it never works.

At some point an owner and support have to commit to a manager as a long/medium term plan, and then give them a decent chance without always looking at the next shiny toy. Cook had two years, but left of his own choice; Jackett had four; I think three full seasons is right unless something really horrible goes wrong. I suspect that the Cowleys will continue to frustrate and annoy me, but I will still believe that continuity will be the best option in the long run.

The trouble is we had continuity with Jackett for 4 years and look where that got us. I believe if it isn't working you should change it, obviously they need to have a chance but from what I've seen from the Cowleys they aren't taking us anywhere but down the table. The performances have been poor in the main and when we concede it's alarming how heads drop. We've been told by DC about how he wants to play but other than Crewe at home I've yet to see it. He obviously can't motivate the team to perform well so imho it's time to change.

It would be interesting if we took a poll on whether we should continue with the Cowleys .IMO I would give them until the end of next season to see where we are maybe start recruiting in spring 2022 if we don’t see any progress. Obviously if we look like falling into the relegation zone this season I would act quicker.

I would give the Cowleys until at least Christmas 2022 and preferably longer, unless it becomes obvious that they have irretrievably lost the dressing room.

So, by your logic, we could be in League Two but as long as the squad was a happy bunch then that's okay. :rofl

My biggest concern with the Cowley's is that I think they actually believe all the guff that they come out with. There are irretrievably factors so far this season that cannot be denied. The team has not improved and failed to produce this 'fast attacking football' we were promised. We were told by Danny Cowley that they took longer to sign players because of the depth of research into the players characters, this seems to have failed as the players they have brought in seem to lack fighting sprit. There are mitigating circumstances in how players have been signed in that the club could not unload high earning players to make way for incoming players. DC had already made his excuses about needing 3 transfer windows to build his team, but what players would we end up with in the next couple of windows judging on what has been brought in so far? Plymouth had a similar player turn round as we did on a smaller budget and they are flying at the moment.

While I am far from impressed with the Cowley's I don't think that getting rid of them at this moment would be the right way to go. I would like to urge them to spend less time talking and more time sorting out the mess they have created. I think they are like a lot of modern coaches where they have turned a simple game into a web of scientific babble. The sooner they get back to basics and get the players they have playing in a way that suits them best the better.

How Danny & Nicky they go from villains to heroes to villains in such a short space of time?

How can the players be so shocking, to showing such commitment, and back to shocking again so quickly?

I just don't understand.

The joys of being a football fan Locky, there is no rhyme or reason

This is Pompey - what has logic got to do with it! :D

The way I see it is that the Cowleys agreed to come to Pompey on trial, and the Board were presumably happy with them and gave them a longer term contract. The least that we can do is to give them a decent amount of time to sort out the squad and to get them playing the way the Cowleys want. I certainly don't believe that they have the squad that they want at the moment, and in addition to this they have been unlucky with injuries, especially the one to Robertson. I believe that they were pretty constrained in the transfer window, and will probably need two more windows to complete the job. Just because we beat Sunderland (who were top of the table) 4 - 0 does not mean that Sunderland are a bad team or that Pompey are a top team. Just because Pompey had a dire period in the second half at Rotherham and lost 4 - 1 does not necessarily mean that Pompey are relegation fodder. For the next month or even two we will be playing with a makeshift defence and I expect our results to be affected by that. Winter transfer windows are not normally the best time to make changes to squads, so it will probably be the summer before we can properly judge the situation. As has been mentioned elsewhere, constantly changing managers is often counter productive.

I know that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, and losing regularly is no fun at all, but please do try to be patient.

OK, I will try to be patient….but the next generation of Pompey fans are drifting away !

Of my three teenage grandsons here on the IOW, only one is now a Pompey supporter, the other two have gravitated to The Premiership, put simply, they think the stuff we play (and often the oppositions we play against) is rubbish…..and whose to argue with them. All three were Fratton regulars but they are down to one now, not good going forward.

Oceans of time for The Eisner / Cowley Machine to finally click and get it right but not to grow the fan base, just think, I see more Premiership shirts than Pompey shirts on the Island, The Owners and Management show signs of living in LaLa Land

My son has also drifted off, though his has become a more an apathy towards football. But I despair at our fanbase sometimes, maybe spoilt during the rollercoaster years of fake money and promises. The idea of solid foundations and gradual improvement seems not only alien but offensive to them. Portsmouth imo has been one of the few areas where the glam of Prem clubs were held at bay, that time may be over as they seek cheap (but not in ÂŁ) glory.

Maybe they should become Newcastle fans.
