35mm Negative Scanners
Anyone got one/used one ?
Been looking at them for a while and was wondering if they are any good and worth spending some cash on ?

We looked at getting thousands of them scanned in at work the department decided against it in the end although the cost was very reasonable. Might be worth looking into getting them sent off?

Thanks 85, might well do that, i am guessing that there are plenty of companies that do it so will have a hunt around.Pompey1985 wrote:We looked at getting thousands of them scanned in at work the department decided against it in the end although the cost was very reasonable. Take a look at the Epson photo flatbed scanners.Fairly cheap and great results. Had mine for about 6years and no problems. Scans 35mm negs and slides as well as 120 film.

Re: 35mm Negative Scanners
I bought a Nikon Coolscan IV around ten years ago and it has performed faultlessly since then, of course results will be dependent on the condition of the negatives but this is one from a cheap 1980s Dixons point and shoot camera:

I'm not sure whether it would work with Vista of Windows7 though.

Re: 35mm Negative Scanners
The two best neg & slide scanners were the Nikon Coolscan IV (& V) like 1G18's got and also the Canon FS4000. Both are fairly regularly on eBay as people have scanned in their old collections. The cheapest (& weakest) is the Canon - the Coolscan's are better, but we're talking circa £200 for the Canon, and £400 for the Nikon's - s/h of course (long since stopped making them). The Coolscan had the added benefit of a batch scanner that you could load up with slides (although that cost £200 itself).
Both won't work with Win 7 onwards (or Vista I think) - UNLESS you get hold of the VueScan software (by Hamrick). This makes 'em work.
BUT: Some of the new flatbeds have come on so well, you'd be hard pushed to tell the difference unless you're a 'pixel-peeper' or intend to use for pro use. If you do have the odd one that you'd like printed up big - get it drum-scanned by a company - they'll charge by the scan, but cheapest for the occasional high-res result if needed.

I have an Ion Film 2SD. Takes about 4 seconds to process a slide or negative.
