Fantastic to watch when they're on it. Not sure they'll make Europe this season but hope they keep things going next season whatever.

I know it's hard to believe that a club having success could have a Sporting / Technical Director but they do.

I also think they show what's possible with setting the right foundations in place.

Losing Potter and then Trossard should have derailed them, but it didn't.

They have the best recruitment in the Prem at the moment - in the last year or two they've sold a handful players for big money (including getting Chelsea to pay over £60m for Cucurella  ), had their manager and technical director poached and somehow managed to recruit better players in every position they lost while having a pretty seamless transition off the pitch.

Shining example of what can be done to punch above your weight if you recruit smartly (Brentford are another albeit with a different playing style), and what they've done really well is to sign the replacement to bed them in before the in demand player leaves (Caicedo last season before they sold Bissouma is probably the best example) to get some continuity. However, they'll have to do it again next summer because Caicedo and Mac Allister at least are likely to leave (for upwards of £70m each).

Signing a handful of experienced heads and senior players like Lallana, Welbeck and Milner (who will join this summer) on free transfers combined with young, talented players with resale value seems a pretty decent strategy.

And like NSR said, they are fantastic to watch when they play like today. De Zerbi has really added something to the solid foundations and they will thoroughly deserve to qualify for Europe if they make it.

If they don't qualify this season then it'll be very interesting to see what happens. De Zerbi wants to be in Europe and has made comments about needing support to do it. So if they don't make it this season then the onus would be heavily on the director/owner to make him stay I think. Or maybe they'll come up with another coach who'll be as good, like they've done before. Whatever happens I hope the club keep getting better.

All the more impressive when you consider where they were
both on and (particularly) off the pitch only 12 or so years ago. I've said it before and I'll keep saying it, we should be looking to emulate Brighton, and the AMEX Stadium is the cornerstone on which their success has been built.

And they've just signed Joao Pedro from Watford who is a perfect fit for them and a fantastic player.

Unfortunately they've just been found out again like in the Everton game. Too much tippy-tappy football. Too much trying to play out from the back when it was obvious Newcastle were on to them. Some moments of great skill but overall too slow and not good enough to impose themselves.Hopefully they can strengthen and learn for next season.

All true NSRailings but you omitted one key point…they didn’t have Webster last night. He starts nearly all their attacks as his passing through the lines is soo good. He should be in the England squad.

Still gutted we sold him but we did get a top player (Clarke) and cash in return, plus nice sell on bonus/s

True Mick, but they seemed hellbent on playing out from the back whatever. Which was mad considering. I've noticed a few teams trying it this season including us. It's great more teams are trying to play football but it increases risk big time.

100% agree, need to play to your strengths and mask weaknesses. Webster s replacement is very poor on the ball and had a shocking night TBH.

I’d have mixed it up more for sure and played into the channels more avoiding the Newcastle press.

Very entertaining first half tonight. It'll be really interesting to see what both managers do in the 2nd half.

Brighton matched City in the second half. Fair result.
