Pompey in Abuja - what’s the story

Morning Pompey,

I was recently on a work trip to Abuja, Nigeria staying at Hilton Transcorp hotel. In the large foyer behind lifts is a big photo wall with all the famous global politicians, ambassadors and royalty that have visited the hotel since it opened.

People like George Bush, Tony Blair, Angela Merkel and Bill Clinton.

One picture caught my eye, a group of football fans outside hotel entrance waving flags and doing what football fans do.

Closer inspection revealed they were Pompey, including John Westwood I believe.

I’m not a Portsmouth fan but interested in the story why Pompey fans stayed there, when it happened. where they visited in Abuja and elsewhere in Nigeria, what they thought of the place.

I’m guessing it was around the time you had Kanu and won the FA Cup.

We played in a pre season tournament there, think it was 2008 against Manchester United.

We also had a pre season game in Hong Kong (I think if was) a year or two before.
